Welcome to Year 2 - Miss Lucas' ClassAutumn 2017
An adventure to Cattow's Farm! What a morning! We hopped on a coach to Cattow's Farm where we met farmers James and Caroline. They taught us all about the process of harvesting barley and how pumpkins are grown from seeds. We saw all kinds of pumpkins, not just orange ones! We also got to meet Naughty Nigel and Craig (the naughty, escapee goats) and Elsie the sheep dog.
P.E SkillsWe have shown great determination and perseverance whilst practicing our ball skills!
Roald Dahl Day!Since starting in the summer, we have already finished reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Twits and The Witches, as well as reading a number of Mr Dahl's poems from Revolting Rhymes! On what would have been Roald Dahl's birthday, we celebrated with some excellent costumes and lots of fun activities.
We are mathematicians! In maths we have been using all kinds of resources to help us with our number bonds to 20!
End of Term FunWe have had fun making pom-poms this week. We learnt 2 different methods and compared them. We had to work together at times and also develop our independence skills for other parts of the task. We have learnt to tie and knot as well as make good colour choices.
Victorian DayWe all went to Beaumanor Hall for a fabulous Victorian Day this week. Our costumes were fantastic and we all enjoyed the trying out the different servants jobs. The highlight of the day was travelling back in time to a Victorian School Room. We knew that school was very different back then, but it was still a shock to be taught by a very scary teacher and use slates, ink wells and ink pens. Luckily the Dunce's Cap never got used!

'Barracca' Garden Visit.
What a fantastic time we had at an amazing show garden just a short walk from school. We saw vegetables, flowers and plants of all kinds. There was a pond and even a Wedding Cake tree. The Silver Birch Walk was a highlight - nice and shady on a hot day. We enjoyed squash and biscuits on the lawn to complete our visit. The gardens are part of what once belonged to the Cotton family. People used to come from miles around for visits to the gardens in the 1920s. We wondered if they sat under the shade of the same tress that we sat under. Grateful thanks to Mr and Mrs Osborn for allowing us to visit and making us feel so welcome.
Claude Monet Inspires our art.
Our topic on Gardens is coming to an end and we enjoyed painting with real flowers to represent the lily pond in Monet's garden. To make the watery effect we scraped paint across our work with a ruler. We had to use many skills including perseverance as the rulers were tricky to work with. We love our results on the classroom wall. Drop in and have a look!
Feeling very proud.
What a wonderful feeling it was to be told that 2JJ are this week's Mathletics Champions! Extra congratulations go to Nam who is number 1 on the Leader Board - what an achievement. We are so proud of you Nam!
Hot Cross Buns for Easter
We have been busy making hot cross buns this week. We read and sequenced instructions, thought of alternative verbs and wrote command sentences. We reflected on the meaning of the cross by reading "When I think about the Cross" from our Easter service. We are looking forward to using the photographs we took of our baking morning to write our own instructions after the holidays.
Science Week- "Change"
We have been tie-dying in 2JJ during science week. First of all we had to learn how to tie-dye and try it out. We were delighted by the results. In our science books, one of 2JJ described it as a masterpiece! We then tried to dye some other materials using the same method. We predicted what might happen and then tried it out. We used foil, a plastic bag, some net and a piece of material that was already dyed. Please come and see our display and our science books if you want to see what happened.
Busy, busy, busy!
We have been using our skills to make a 3D daffodil for a very special person in our lives.
Author Study
We are very excited to be taking home our Author Study bags this week. We will each get a turn to take home a book by Anthony Browne to share at home and add to the Author Study book in some way. We are loving Anthony Browne books and are making links between his different stories and characters.
Inspire Morning.
We really enjoyed working alongside our parents this morning. We learnt a lot about answering questions about what we are reading. Everyone enjoyed it!
Our Assembly
We really enjoyed sharing our learning about the United Kingdom with the rest of the school and our parents. We even got our visitors to count in Welsh!
We managed to remember all the words to the song Loch Lomond too. ( We think some members of staff had a tear in their eye!) It was great sharing our tartan art work and our UK Human Fact File.

Maths Challenge.
We have been using the Maths Challenge area of our classroom - how many squares can you see? Look carefully!
Our next challenge is to put the 100 square back together.

Science - Shaping up!
Our new Science unit is called "Shaping Up!" . Today we have been using the vocabulary: twist, bend, stretch and squash. We worked with modelling dough at first then we worked in pairs to make a 'human sculpture' with a sequence of actions that changed our shape.
Both Year 2 Classes at their Christmas Party.
Sewing Christmas Stockings.
We have been busy making Christmas stockings for the Christmas Fair. We have learnt about sewing, threading needles and how important it is to persevere even when it's tricky! We were great at helping each other when we got stuck. The results were fabulous and we sold out.
Getting to know each other.
We have been getting to know each other in 2JJ in lots of different ways.
We started by working as a team to make and hold together a 'web'. We all had to keep our part tight or else the whole web would fall apart. We were so good at it that we managed to stand up and sit down again, still holding the web. Team work at its best!
We have played a dice game where the number we threw generated a sentence about ourselves that we had to finish. For example, " I love it when..." or "I worry when..." We learnt such a lot about each other. We recorded some of our answers on dice paper and displayed them in our classroom.
Our Year 2 theme of Toys has been keeping us busy too. We have made a Toy Museum in the classroom and have been enjoying getting to know the 100 year old teddy. We compared him to a modern day Pudsey Bear on Children in Need Day. Joshua's mum let us borrow her 33 year old bear too. We found many stories about old bears which we have shared together. There was one very mysterious toy in our 'museum' from the 1970's. Can you spot it on the photos? Do you know what it is?
We have decided together that we want our class to be: conscientious, enthusiastic, helpful, kind, calm and independent.

Our trip to Cattows Farm
On a beautiful Autumn day we went to Cattows Farm in Heather for the morning. The children had the experience of touring the farm on a trailer attached to a Ford tractor where they met a field of Hereford cows with a bull called Harry. They learnt about the wheat grown in the field and how it is harvested. They looked at the sheep and the breeds and found out that the wool is used for jumpers and carpets. On foot the children looked at the fruits grown and we could see the strawberries and raspberries that were left from the season. The highlight was the field of pumpkins where the children measured the circumference and picked four to take back to school ready to make pumpkin soup.
